I recently obtained a Series-1 Full Frame reel from Taylor Fly Fishing, which carries the tradition of the Type-1 into the next generation, so to speak. It is a truly high-functioning, large arbor reel with a sealed, carbon fiber drag system. Also, it’s full-frame design makes it great for traditional fly fishing as well as Euronymphing techniques — you don’t have to worry about those pesky mono rigs slipping out between the spool and cage.
The Series-1 is available in two sizes: 4-6-weight and 7-9-weight. I got the 7-9-weight to fit my 8-weight steelhead rod, and I’m glad I did. This reel is visually stunning yet sturdy, and I believe it holds up to Taylor’s claim that this is “one of the lightest 100% sealed drag reels available on the market today.”
The uses for this reel don’t end with freshwater, though. Its sealed drag system makes it great for light salt work, too.

Fly reels don’t often get the attention that fly rods often do. The reels primary function, after all, is to hold line and provide a quality drag system for battling big fish. The reel gets taken for granted and goes unnoticed until it stops working, and that’s where a reel’s quality comes into question. A good, high quality reel that is properly cared for will last many years, and I have no doubt that this Series-1 Full Frame is a high quality reel.
